EL105 - Online Language: Communicating with Students

This course will provide you with information to help you effectively communicate with students and encourage communication among students in an online environment. You will learn the importance of facilitating instructor-to-student (I2S), student-to-instructor (S2I), and student-to-student (S2S) communication. Technology tools play a vital role in the communication process and several are discussed in this course. In addition, discussion is also provided to help you further understand how to manage and measure communication in an online course and help students communicate effectively.


Module 1: Technology Tools for Effective Communication

  • Recognize the importance of technology tools in the communication process.
  • Examine specific functions of a technology tool to facilitate good communication.
  • Identify the pros and cons of technology tools for communication.
  • Reflect on tool effectiveness for communication to ensure proper usage.

Module 2: Civility and Managing Overall Communication

  • Investigate various protocols for communication in an online environment.
  • Design guidelines to establish good communication.
  • Develop a framework for managing the overall communication process.
  • Establish a pattern for communication in the online environment.

Module 3: Helping Students Communicate Effectively Online

  • Compare the various generations of students.
  • Promote student engagement in the communication process and encourage those not participating.
  • Identify challenges to communication in the online environment.
  • Provide students with resources to become more successful online learners.

Module 4: Measuring Good Communication

  • Develop participation policies for the online environment.
  • Recognize strategies for interaction and dialogue in the online environment.
  • Identify effective techniques for promoting community.
  • Utilize rubrics to assess communication.
